Flavor & Fragrance Supply Project in Iran for a Flavor Manufacturer
The Challenge:
A Chinese flavor and fragrance manufacturer had a long-term supply agreement with food processing plants and personal care companies in Iran, focusing on food-grade flavors, cosmetic fragrances, and accompanying samples. Flavors and fragrances are a classic category involving chemical ingredients, high documentation requirements, and moderate cargo value — some products contain flammable components, while others are food-contact materials, subjecting them to strict transport and import compliance requirements. The client originally planned to ship by sea, but Persian Gulf tensions caused severe schedule instability. Additionally, chemical-containing products in LCL sea freight scenarios are easily implicated in customs inspections triggered by other shippers' cargo, making clearance timelines unpredictable. The Iranian clients had fixed production line schedules — if flavors ran out as a production input, entire production lines could grind to a halt. While air freight is fast, flavor shipment volumes were relatively large, making air freight costs far beyond what the client could bear. The client urgently needed an alternative that offered stable transit times, controllable compliance, and coverage of Iranian customs clearance.
Our Solution:
The client ultimately chose our Iran TIR full-truckload service, booking an exclusive truck to ship flavors and accompanying samples. We arranged pickup from the factory, transported the goods to our self-operated supervised warehouse at Khorgos Port for export customs clearance, and then moved the cargo by TIR truck directly to Iran — one truck, all the way through. Given the characteristics of the flavor and fragrance category, we made three targeted arrangements: First, we confirmed Iran's import compliance requirements in advance and assisted the client in preparing MSDS, transport identification reports, certificate of origin, commercial invoice, packing list, and ingredient declarations to ensure complete documentation and consistent declarations for chemical-containing products. Second, we used sealed, leak-proof packaging — adding shock-absorbing lining and secondary sealing to flavor drums to prevent leakage and odor diffusion during transport, with the full truckload independently sealed and never mixed with any other shipper's cargo. Third, we confirmed Iran's import tariff policies and required documentation for food-contact raw materials in advance, assisting the client in declaring in a compliant manner to avoid inspection delays caused by unclear ingredient declarations or document discrepancies. The route departed via Khorgos, transited Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan, entered Iran, and then delivered directly to the client's Tehran factory warehouse, where unloading, handover, and appearance inspection were completed.
The Results:
-
45 days from Kashgar to Iran — far faster than the sea freight option at the time. The client's replenishment cycle shifted from unpredictable to lockable, and the Iranian client's production line raw material supply was secured.
-
Full truckload, direct delivery — no consolidation, no transloading. Flavors remained independently sealed throughout, with zero damage, zero leakage, and zero loss, and 100% packaging integrity.
-
Iran import customs clearance included. Chemical-containing products were declared with compliant documentation. The client did not need to engage a separate Iranian customs broker, avoiding inspection delays caused by unclear ingredient declarations or document discrepancies — and also avoiding the risk of being implicated by other shippers' document issues in LCL scenarios.
-
Sealed, leak-proof packaging performed as designed. Upon arrival, there was no leakage, no odor diffusion, and no drum deformation. The client passed acceptance inspection on the first attempt.
-
The client immediately incorporated this TIR channel into its primary logistics plan for the Iranian market, shipping steadily on a quarterly basis. Subsequent batches of flavors and accompanying samples have followed the same model.
Client Testimonial:
"With flavors and fragrances, the documentation is complex and the ingredients are sensitive — what we fear most is customs getting stuck and being implicated by other cargo. Sea freight is cheap, but an LCL inspection can drag on for weeks, and the client's production line can't wait. TIR full truckload goes all the way in one truck, independently sealed, with MSDS and ingredient documentation prepared in advance — customs cleared on the first attempt. If the transit time is locked in and the client's production line keeps running, that's when we dare to take on long-term orders."
